What ISO 11452 governs

The ISO 11452 series of standards describes test methods for the immunity of automotive components to narrowband radiated electromagnetic energy — regardless of the powertrain (combustion, diesel, electric). It is the immunity counterpart to the emissions standard CISPR 25.

The most important parts

ISO 11452-2 — radiated coupling in the absorber chamber (ALSE method), using an antenna.
ISO 11452-4 — Bulk Current Injection (BCI): coupling via a current clamp on the wiring harness.

BCI in detail

In the BCI method, an injection clamp (a current transformer) is placed around the wiring harness of the device under test and RF current is fed into the lines — an efficient reproduction of the fields that cables pick up in real driving operation. Typical frequency range: 1 MHz to 400 MHz. The test levels (e.g. approx. 60–200 mA) depend on the installation location and function and are specified by the OEM.

Component vs. whole vehicle

ISO 11452 tests the component. For the whole vehicle there are separate methods (ISO 11451). Which standard and which levels apply is specified by the OEM specification.

What is the difference from CISPR 25?

CISPR 25 concerns emissions (what the component emits), ISO 11452 concerns immunity (how robust it is against incoming RF). Both belong to automotive EMC and are usually required together.
