Drives, switching operations, long cables: the industrial environment is electromagnetically noisy. The generic standards EN 61000-6-2 and -6-4 set the framework for it.

Why industrial EMC is special

In the industrial environment, powerful switching loads (frequency converters, motors, contactors) meet sensitive measurement and control technology. Correspondingly more interference is present — and devices must be correspondingly more robust.

EN 61000-6-2 — Immunity (industrial)

The generic standard for immunity in the industrial sector requires higher test levels than the residential/commercial environment (EN 61000-6-1) — because stronger interference occurs on site. Testing covers, among other things, ESD, burst and surge (see ESD, Burst & Surge).

EN 61000-6-4 — Emissions (industrial)

The industrial emission limit values (EN 61000-6-4) are less strict than in the residential sector (EN 61000-6-3), since industrial sites are not directly shared with residential areas and broadcast reception.
